The Green Sanctuary Task Force worked hard and got our congregation certified as a Green Sanctuary by the UUA. This involves making our buildings and practices more energy-efficient, supporting environmentally progressive activities, events and initiatives, and educating members of the church community and the general public in ways to live in a more environmentally responsible manner, among other things. The co-chairs of the Green Sanctuary Task Force are Liz Polvinen and Jim Savicki.
As part of its charge, the task force places articles on environment issues in the Bell-Ringer. Read one here (MS Word doc).
We recently wrote a letter to the Boy Scouts about their discrimination policies. You can read that letter here.
Building on a long tradition of social activism at First Parish Church, the Social Justice Committee periodically sponsors a Social Action Table. For more information click here.
Since 1826, the UU Urban Ministry has been working side-by-side with Boston's urban communities to create opportunities and instill hope for a brighter future. UUUM concentrates efforts primarily in out-of-school-time programming for at-risk youth (tutoring, weekend enrichment programs, summer camps) and a shelter, Renewal House, for those fleeing domestic violence. UUUM also operates a program focused on providing support for men in transition, including those involved with the criminal justice system.
UUUM's ministry is rooted in direct experience and service with those in Boston who are struggling for better lives. The organization seeks to build bridges of understanding and mutuality so that people in various economic circumstances can work together to effect change. UUUM's goal is to create a human community that is peaceful and just.
Mission Statement: The Unitarian Universalist Urban Ministry unites communities and transforms individuals through education, service, and advocacy. We engage communities and congregations in social action and change with programs that empower youth and adults to realize their full potential.
First Parish Church has a long-standing tradition of social activism and a commitment to peace, social justice, and the democratic process. Much of our activism is channeled into charitable activities like the Soup Kitchen and the Box Project. But we also seek to make a difference in the struggle for a more just and peaceful world.
